KidCap Therapy Advantages for Plagiocephaly in Infants and Children

There is a popular debate in the plagiocephaly online community over whether a device is "dynamic" or "static", "active" or "passive." Recent Studies prove that ALL CRANIAL MOLDING DEVICES are inherently static.

Here's Why?
  • There are no motors, moving parts or complex machinery
  • When left alone on the table, the device does nothing
  • The device will NOT initiate correction upon the head, it reacts to growth
Many "Band" style orthoses for plagiocephaly claim to provide a "dynamic" pressure, which is a comfortable, low pressure upon the child's head to aid in correction.  It is important to recognize that makers of this device are referring to a helmet closed by a Velcro strap.  There is dynamic pressure, but this isn't the pressure that corrects the head. Band devices affect a dynamic pressure that will vary during the treatment, but it cannot be set accurately and consistently due to the simplicity of its closure system.  The KidCap closure system provides the most precisely set environment.

How KidCap is different from Band-style devices?

Other Advantages:

  • Better cranial and facial symmetry as a plagiocephaly therapy outcome
KidCap treatment will surely lead to a more rounded head and symmetrical facial features.

  • Better ear symmetry
Facial asymmetry may in effect cause ears to be positioned at different heights on the sides of the head. This, for example, may pose problems if a child later needs eye glasses.

  • Improved self-image later in life
Because there is a rather small window to correct plagiocephaly, uncorrected asymmetry could lead to self-esteem/confidence issues if untreated, especially if asymmetry is severe. childrens, cranial, facial symmetry, virginia, maryland, md, va, dc

  • Reduced risk of jaw related disorders as a side-effect of plagiocephaly treatment
Symptoms of a jaw disorder may be a misalignment causing jaw pain, discomfort and/or speech problems

  • Reduced need of surgical intervention for plagiocephaly and related disorders
Ignoring a child's need for treatment can lead to worsening plagiopcephaly. This can occur until approx. 20 months of age. By 18 months, a child will have much less success with orthotic treatments (KidCap) and no longer be a candidate for nonsurgical options.
